Leo Tolstoy has some similarities to Chris McCandless. First of all, Tolstoy gave up his estate to his family and decided to live like a peasant. He left his comfortable lifestyle for a hardworking and more meaningful life. Chris McCandless also left his family, home, and his very well off lifestyle. The only difference between these two is that Tolstoy eventually came back into society because he wasn’t doing very well on his own. Another similarity these two have is that they both attended college for some time. Tolstoy attended the University of Kazan. This was very impressive considering he even went to college during his time period. He actually dropped out and did not get a degree. Chris attended Emory University and graduated with high honors. Furthermore, both Chris and Tolstoy don’t really appreciate or favor their governments. Tolstoy called his government the domination of the wicked ones while Chris was vulgarly insulting the government and their life controlling laws. Chris said this to Jim when Jim asked him if he had a hunting license. Both of these individuals show a little anarchist side in them.

Jane Goodall is similar to Chris McCandless too. Jane Goodall is an English primatologist. She loved animals and the wild. She set out into Africa to understand the chimpanzees. She actually lived outside of society and lived among the chimpanzees. No other primatologist has ever done that. Goodall’s love for her profession and animals definitely gave her the courage and the will power to actually live with the dangerous chimpanzees. Chris is similar to Jane Goodall because he also decided to leave society and live in the wild. McCandless wasn’t going into the wild to study a certain animal like Goodall, but McCandless did leave society for something he truly wanted to do. His will power also gave him the courage to desert his good life and live freely of society.
